Description
Benavon is a well-proportioned, symmetrical country house dating from approximately 1800 to 1819. It is enhanced by its mature front gardens. The house is a two-storey, three-bay, east-facing building with extensions to the left gable and rear. The roof is gabled, coped and covered in natural slate, with squared granite rubble chimneys on each gable. The walls are of regularly coursed squared granite rubble, with some snecking. The front elevation features a modern timber entrance door with six glazed panels, with a window to either side, and three windows above. All windows are 6/6 sliding sash windows with granite cills. A single-storey, flat-roofed extension, also of squared granite rubble, adjoins the south gable, containing tripartite sliding sash windows on its east-facing elevation, along with a bay window and a French window on its south-facing elevation. The first floor gable of the main block is cement rendered, with a 6/6 sliding sash window. A two-storey, flat-roofed extension, matching the house’s construction and window style, extends from the rear (north) elevation, which faces an enclosed yard. The north gable is plain. The gardens are characterized by lawns, mature trees, shrubs, and flowerbeds. A modern rubble wall marks the boundary to the road, erected during improvements to the road and Glasdrumman Bridge. Wrought iron gates with dog bars are set within cast-iron posts featuring Gothic lancet panels and crocketted finials. A building is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, and it is explicitly labelled 'Benavon House' from the 1901 edition onwards. In the mid-1950s, the father of the current owner added the rear extension and rebuilt the left-hand extension. The windows and interior are believed to have been remodelled at the same time. The listing includes the main house, gates, and boundary walling.
