Colligan Bridge, Adjacent to 69 Head Rd, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4HX

The Colligan Bridge is a rural bridge situated adjacent to 69 Head Road, Kilkeel, Newry, County Down. Constructed between 1800 and 1819, it is a segmental twin arched structure carrying the Head Road over the Kilkeel River. The bridge is built of squared granite rubble in regular courses, with roughly dressed voussoirs. Angled cutwaters rise to just above the arch spring level on both sides, and it features rusticated copings to strap pointed parapets. Traces of concrete shuttering on the underside of the arches indicate later strengthening work. An unnamed bridge appears at this location on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map (Down sheet 53), and it is identified as Colligan Bridge from 1859 onwards. The style of dressed coursed masonry suggests a construction date in the early 19th century. While lacking architectural or historic merit justifying formal listing, it is considered to possess industrial archaeological interest.
