Bridge over Kilkeel River, Aughnahoory Road, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4HF

This is a bridge carrying a minor road over the Kilkeel River, built between 1820 and 1839. The bridge is of some interest due to its contrasting construction materials, featuring 19th-century rubble stonework alongside early 20th-century coursed granite blockwork. It is a skew semicircular culvert constructed entirely of granite. The abutments, spandrels, and parapets are made of coursed rubble, while the voussoirs (the wedge-shaped stones forming the arch) are finely dressed. The parapet is finished with large granite blocks. The bed of the river is paved, and there's an artificial waterfall immediately below the culvert. The arch rises to a maximum height of 2.5 metres and spans 1.9 metres, a relatively small opening compared to the depth of the walling above the arch crown. A section of the approach wall on the downstream left side was repaired in 1909 using squared granite blocks laid in regular courses and strap pointed. One of these stones bears a 10cm inscription reading “1909”. The bridge appears on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map and subsequent editions. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest.
