Description
A terrace of three houses aligned north-south on the east side of Mountain Road in Kilkeel. The buildings appear as two storeys from the road frontage due to the sloping topography, but are in fact three storeys, with a semi-basement accessible from the rear.
The terrace comprises two distinct building phases. The original structure consists of three openings on the right side. A three-opening block was subsequently added to the left, and during this addition, the left opening of the original house was amalgamated with the right-hand opening of the new block to create the current No.30. The two left openings of the addition form No.32. No.28 occupies the south end.
All roofs are pitched natural slate with overhangs to gables finished with plain bargeboards. Rendered chimneys sit on both exposed gables and on what was the left gable of the original house before the northern additions. Half-round plastic gutters run beneath, and all walls are painted and rendered with projecting eaves courses to which shallow boards are affixed.
The original right-hand block (comprising No.28 and part of No.30) spans three bays and is delineated by stucco quoins at both ends. The street elevation features a painted four-panel timber entrance door to No.28 set in a modern painted timber pedimented encasement at the centre of this section. To the left is a 6/6 painted timber sliding sash window with exposed box and painted granite cill. To the right is a modern shallow bow window with multi-pane timber casements. At first-floor level are three equally spaced 6/6 timber sash windows in line with those below, all with exposed boxes and painted granite cills. The right gable of No.28 is rough-cast rendered with plastic down pipes to each side and no openings.
The rear elevation more clearly shows the division into three houses. No.28's basement features a back door—a painted modern half-glazed door—with a top-hung 1/1 painted timber casement window to its left. At ground-floor level are two 6/3 sash windows, and at first-floor level is a 2/3 sash at left and a 6/3 at right. All openings are in line vertically. All sash windows throughout have exposed boxes.
The terrace does not appear on the 1859 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map but is depicted on the 1901 edition, indicating construction during the second half of the 19th century. The building has interest in its setting and group value. Modern alterations, including plastic gutters, plastic down pipes, and replacement windows and doors, detract from the original character.
