Description

A terrace of three houses aligned north-south on the east side of Mountain Road, Kilkeel. Numbers 28, 30, and 32 are designated HB16/03/009A, HB16/03/009B, and HB16/03/009C respectively. The buildings appear two-storey from the road due to the topography, but are in fact three-storey, incorporating a semi-basement accessible from the rear. The terrace is divided into two phases of construction, with the original three openings on the right and a subsequent three-opening wide block added to the left. The left opening of the original house was combined with the right-hand opening of the addition to form number 30, while the two left openings of the addition comprise number 32.

All roofs are pitched and covered with natural slate, featuring overhangs to gables finished with plain bargeboards. Rendered chimneys are visible on both exposed gables, and also on what was the left gable of the original house before the northern addition. Half-round plastic gutters are present. The walls are painted and rendered, with a projecting eaves course.

Number 32, occupying the left two bays of the left-hand block, has a glazed multi-pane timber entrance door with a transom light, set within a shallow porch shared with number 30. To the left of the door is a two-over-two sash window, similarly detailed. Two further two-over-two sashes are aligned above. A set of decorative wrought-iron carriage gates, approximately 1.5 meters high, provides access to a lane serving all three houses. The left gable of number 32 is roughcast rendered and features two symmetrically arranged one-over-one sliding sashes on the first floor, centered around a chimney.

The rear elevation clearly delineates the three houses. Number 32 features a modern glazed door with sidelight at basement level, alongside a two-over-two sash window. Two further two-over-two sashes are aligned on the first and second floors, mirroring the ground floor openings.

The terrace was constructed between 1860 and 1879, as it is not depicted on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map but is shown on the 1901 edition. The building displays architectural interest through its style and proportions, although later alterations detract somewhat from its original character. It holds local historical interest and possesses group value alongside the adjacent properties.
