Mullagh Old Bridge, Adjacent to 40 Main Rd, Ballymartin, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4NW

The Mullagh Old Bridge is a single-span road bridge located adjacent to 40 Main Road, Ballymartin, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down. Likely dating to the 18th century, specifically between 1820 and 1839, it carried what was formerly the Newcastle-Kilkeel road over the Mullagh River. The bridge is constructed of random granite fieldstones for the parapets and spandrels, with split Silurian rubble forming the voussoirs and soffit.

The construction shows two distinct phases; the upstream span features a semicircular profile, while the downstream section, approximately twice the width of the upstream portion, has a segmental arch. Recent repairs include repointing the bridge faces with cement and capping the parapets with cement. The bridge was marked on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of County Down (sheet 56), but a new bridge built slightly upstream superseded it by 1859. The bridge possesses industrial archaeological interest and holds some historical interest and local value.
