Description
Pair of cast and wrought iron gates with granite piers and flanking walls. Provides the main entrance into the grounds of Church of the Sacred Heart (HB16/29/017A) and the Parochial House (HB16/29/017B). Gates: black painted wrought iron with plain main bars terminating in spear heads; spear-headed dog bars double up to bottom section, and alternate barley-sugar bars (not full height) support cast iron flowers in middle section. Piers: Cruciform smoothly dressed ashlar granite piers with recessed semicircular-headed panel (with chamfered reveals) to front and rear faces. Rest upon an octagonal rock faced base and a similar ashlar granite course, which broaches into a cruciform plan. Overhanging smoothly dressed ashlar granite coping with a gablet to each of the four sides, truncated ashlar granite fleche rises from ridge crossing to support a wrought iron cross. Concave screen quadrants in dressed ashlar flank each pier. They consist of punched granite base course, smoothly dressed chamfer course, and punched granite wall with steep, ridged smoothly dressed copings, which do not overhang. The quadrants are terminated by plain rock faced granite piers, with similar copings, continuing along the boundary on either side is a low rock faced ashlar granite wall with crennelated rockfaced copings.
