Boundary Marker on Castle Bog, Off Sandbank Rd, Hilltown, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5XU

This boundary marker, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, stands at the junction of the Leitrim, Rostrevor Mountains, and Mourne Mountains West townlands, located just within the Mourne Mountains West. The marker is an unworked, three-sided granite stone. Incised in capital letters on the west face, which looks towards the Rostrevor Mountains, is the name ‘Ross’. The north face, facing towards the Leitrim townland, bears the inscription 'Batt'. The east face displays the name ‘Kilmorey’ upside down. The boundary with the Leitrim townland is defined by a low rubble stone wall topped with a post and wire fence. The boundary between Rostrevor and the Mourne Mountains consists only of a post and wire fence. It is noteworthy that this marker is not depicted on any Ordnance Survey 6-inch map.
