Description

Granite boundary stone, dated 1871-72, located at the corner of Armagh Road and College Gardens, approximately 1 kilometre north of Newry town centre.

This is one of fourteen boundary markers that remain largely intact along Newry's former municipal limits, constituting one of the most complete collections of such features in Northern Ireland. The stone is oblong in section, standing about 0.56 metres in height, with a dressed finish to the front face, rock-faced sides, and an arched top (which may originally have been more angular). The front face bears the letters 'MB', standing for 'Municipal Boundary'. The stone now displays a pronounced backward tilt, and part of the front face is covered in black paint or tar.

Following the Lighting of Towns (Ireland) Act of 1828, local government was established in Newry through the Commissioners of Police. A municipal boundary was agreed in subsequent years, with the area of the town stated to have been fixed by special act in 1865. However, official status for this boundary was not confirmed until 1871, following the passing of the Newry Improvement and Water Act, when the Town Commissioners were formally incorporated as a municipal body and the settlement limits were laid down. This boundary was later readopted by the Newry Urban District Council, which succeeded the Commissioners following local government reform in 1898.

In October 1871, the Commissioners appointed Robert Beard to furnish eighteen cut granite stones for borough boundary marks according to specifications. Local press references to 'boundary stones' do not appear frequently until mid-1872, suggesting the markers were supplied around 1871-72. Beard was likely Robert Baird, a stone cutter recorded as having a yard in Mary Street during the 1880s. Whilst some stones may be later replacements, most of the in-situ granite markers visible today probably belong to those originally supplied by Beard. Between 1903 and 1939, Ordnance Survey maps marked at least twenty stones along the Urban District Council boundary, though precise dating is difficult as almost all stones share the same basic design and inscriptions. This particular stone at Armagh Road is marked on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map and is likely to have been one of the series put in place in 1871-72 to delineate the jurisdiction of the newly incorporated Town Commissioners. As a group, these boundary stones are important local artefacts, marking both literally and metaphorically Newry's growth and regional importance during the mid to later Victorian period.
