Description
This is a three-storey, two-bay terrace house located on Canal Street, Newry. It was likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, based on its appearance and documentary evidence. The house is situated on the east side of Canal Street, directly adjacent to numbers 111 and 107.
The west-facing facade is rendered, with a corbelled, overhanging eaves detail. The front door, located in the left bay, is boarded with a three-paned glazed transom above. The windows are painted timber box sliding sashes with granite sills. A single boarded-up window is present on the ground floor to the right. The upper floor windows are not aligned with the ground floor openings. The first floor has two six-pane windows, most of which are broken. The second floor has two three-pane windows, aligned with the first floor but reduced in height. A pitched natural slate roof is topped with terracotta ridges and a single concrete copped red brick chimney on the right gable. Semicircular metal rainwater goods run down the left side, shared with the adjacent property at number 111.
The rear elevation is smooth rendered and contains two windows on each upper floor (ground floor not inspected). Exposed box six-pane sliding sashes are present on the first floor, and two smaller three-pane exposed box sashes on the second floor. The north and south gables form party walls with the properties at numbers 111 and 107.
The house was shown on an Ordnance Survey town map of 1835 and a valuation from 1838 described it as being occupied by James Henning and measuring 15 feet wide, 23 feet deep, and 25 feet high. A subsequent valuation in 1863 confirmed the existence of a three-storey building with similar dimensions.
Historic records indicate the building is currently derelict. The terrace's architectural integrity has been impacted by a shop front at number 113.
