Description
This is a three-storey plus attic, two-bay terraced house situated on the west side of Canal Street in Newry. It was built between 1860 and 1879 as one of a pair, the other being number 40. The house appears in the 1871 Valuation Revision entry, occupying a site that was previously vacant.
The exterior is characterized by an artificial slate roof with corbelled, oversailing eaves and a modern red brick chimney with three pots to the left gable. The facade is lined render with a painted basecourse and a bootscraper recessed into the render to the left of the front door. The left bay is wider than the right. The main entrance, on the right-hand side at ground floor level, is a modern multi-panelled stained timber door with a glazed transom light above. All windows on the front facade are vertically divided, painted timber sliding sash windows with horns and painted granite cills. On the ground floor, there are two windows, and each upper floor has three windows spaced evenly apart, aligning with the ground floor openings; the second-floor windows are slightly reduced in height. The south (number 40) and north (number 44) gables form party walls with the adjacent properties.
The rear elevation is cement-rendered and adjoins a modern extension on the ground floor to the left. The remaining ground floor at the rear was not inspected. The rear windows are modern fixed timber windows with top-hung transoms and granite cills; there is one on the first floor left, one between the first and second floors to the right, one on the second floor left, and one diminished in height between the second floor and attic. The extension has a flat felted roof and wet dashed walls with a large modern timber window. The rainwater goods are semicircular plastic and metal, and discharge to the adjacent property.
The house is of some group value but does not possess sufficient individual architectural merit to warrant special protection.
