Description
This is a mid-19th century terrace house, one of three similar houses built on the west side of Canal Street in Newry. The terrace replaced earlier buildings shown on an 1835 map, but cleared by 1861; the current terrace is documented from 1874, when it was newly built and unoccupied, with occupants recorded the following year.
The house is a two-bay, three-storey structure. It has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate tiles, featuring a corbelled masonry eaves course and semicircular metal rainwater goods that drain into the adjacent property. There is no chimney. The front elevation is finished with painted lined render. The right bay is wider than the left. The main entrance is on the ground floor to the left and consists of a modern six-panel timber door with a single-pane glazed over-light. All windows are painted timber 2/2 sliding sash windows with painted granite sills; there are two to the ground floor right, and three equally spaced on each of the upper floors. These are aligned with the ground floor openings, and the second-floor windows are reduced in height. The left (number 46) and right (number 50) gables form party walls with the neighbouring properties. The rear (west) elevation is cement rendered, with a two-storey return to the right. A single, floor-to-ceiling modern painted timber window is present on the ground floor left, with a similar window above on the first floor. A small modern fixed painted timber window with a top-hung transom is positioned to the right of the lower windows on the second floor, set above an extension roof. The extension has a flat felted roof and cement rendered walls, abutted at the rear by a second, similar single-storey extension, which contains modern painted timber windows and a rear door, of no particular interest. The property lies within a conservation area.
