Description

This is a three-storey, two-bay terrace house located on Canal Street in Newry. The building dates from 1820 to 1839 and is the left unit of a group of three similar houses. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with corbelled masonry eaves and a slated abutment that matches the adjacent property at number 44. The building has semicircular metal rainwater goods with a downpipe on the left side, and no chimney.

The front elevation is faced with painted lined render. The right bay is wider than the left. The main entrance is on the ground floor to the left, consisting of a single granite step leading to a painted four-panel door with a beaded muntin and fielded panels, and a two-paned glazed over-light. A bootscraper niche is situated on the wall to the right of the door. All the windows are painted timber sliding sash windows with horns and painted granite cills, with spring balances. There are two windows on the ground floor to the right, and three to each of the upper floors. Windows on the first and second floors are equally spaced, aligning with the ground-floor openings; the second-floor windows have been reduced in height. The gable ends of numbers 44 and 48, which form party walls with the neighbouring properties, are visible.

The rear (west) elevation, which was inspected from a distance, is cement-rendered and features a two-storey extension to the left. The ground and first floors were not inspected from this side. A modern, top-hung, one-over-one timber window with a granite cill is located between the first and second floors on the right side. A modern, single-paned timber casement window is positioned on the second floor to the left, above the extension. The extension itself has a flat felted roof, cement-rendered walls, and two modern painted timber windows on its rear wall; the ground floor section of the extension was not inspected.

Historical records show that four houses occupied this location on an 1835 Ordnance Survey map, but these were cleared by 1861. The current terrace of three houses was first documented in the 1874 valuation revision book, at which time they were vacant and were subsequently occupied the following year. The building is located within a conservation area.
