Description

This is one of a terrace of three, three-storey houses situated on a corner plot at the junction of Canal Street and Barrack Street, built between 1820 and 1839. The building is recorded as being occupied in 1838 and further confirmed in the 1863 valuation.

The house has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with terracotta ridges and a cement-rendered chimney on the right gable. Rainwater goods are made of metal and drain to the adjacent property. The west-facing front elevation is rendered and features a shop front at ground floor level, a painted sign between the ground and first floors, and a street sign to the left at the same level. A single granite step leads to a tongue-and-groove sheeted door with a plain transom. To the right of the door is a single-paned shop window with a painted concrete cill and a security grill. The first floor has two six-pane sliding sash windows, while the second floor has two smaller three-pane sliding sash windows, all with painted granite cills. Many panes within the windows are broken.

The south-facing gable forms a party wall with the neighbouring property. The north-facing gable has painted lined render, a large modern advertising hoarding at first floor level, and a single boarded-up window opening with a painted granite cill at second floor/attic level. The rear of the building is adjoined at ground floor by a return that fills the rear yard and connects to a rear outhouse. Above ground floor, the rear wall is rendered and features a single blocked-up window (originally six-pane) on the first floor and two smaller blocked-up windows (originally three-pane) on the second floor. An extension to the rear includes a stairwell that abuts at first floor right and has a pitched natural slate roof. The extension’s wall is dashed, incorporating the side wall of the outhouse and is flush with the main building's left elevation, and features a sheet metal door and a blocked-up window at ground floor. A second blocked-up window is located on the first floor, serving the stairs to the upper floors. The outbuilding’s roof is hipped and natural slated, abutting an adjacent building. The building’s original dimensions, as recorded in 1835, were 14ft 6in x 23ft x 25ft.
