Description

This is a three-storey, two-bay terrace house on the east side of Canal Street in Newry. It dates from the early 19th century, likely between 1820 and 1839. The building is part of a terrace of three, but its architectural integrity is compromised by a shop front at number 113.

The house has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with a single concrete chimney stack to the right. It features semicircular metal rainwater goods and a shared downpipe with the adjacent property at number 109. The west-facing facade is rendered, with corbelled eaves and three horizontal bands of wall plates, one at ground floor level and two above. The main entrance is on the ground floor to the left, accessed by a granite step leading to a boarded-up doorway with a second two-paneled door. A single window opening, also boarded over and with a painted granite cill, is located to the right of the entrance. The upper floor windows are not aligned with the ground floor openings and are painted timber, exposed box sliding sashes with painted granite cills. The first floor has two 6/6 windows, while the second floor has two smaller 3/3 windows, aligned with those on the first floor. Many of the window panes are broken, and the building is exposed to the elements. The north and south gables form party walls with the properties at numbers 113 and 109.

The rear elevation is smoothly rendered, with two windows on each upper floor; the ground floor rear was not inspected. These upper floor windows consist of two 6/6 exposed box sliding sashes on the first floor, and two smaller 3/3 exposed box sashes on the second floor.

The house was shown on an Ordnance Survey town map from 1835 and in the 1838 Valuation Office records as being occupied by Robert McEvoy, with dimensions of 5ft x 23ft x 25ft. The 1863 Valuation Office records confirm a three-storey building with similar dimensions. The building is currently recorded as derelict.
