Description

The site comprises two pairs of gate piers, forming part of the now incomplete Red Hall estate. The inner piers, located at the end of Redhall Drive, are a pair of square stone piers with tall pyramidal tops that have been truncated. They are constructed of roughly squared basalt rubble with a projecting string course at the base of the top. A modern tubular iron gate is present. The outer piers, marking the entrance to Redhall Drive, are larger square piers also constructed of roughly squared basalt rubble in courses, with block dressings in brickwork. They have a coping of rough-hewn basalt blocks, though the tops of the piers are damaged and overgrown. Screen walls of basalt rubble extend to each side of the outer piers.

The piers were built in connection with Red Hall itself. While not depicted on Ordnance Survey maps, a driveway is shown on the 1831 Ordnance Survey map, though not at the current entrance position. The inner piers are stylistically similar to another pair of piers (HB06/05/013E) located further along the same drive and may date from around 1800. The outer pair of piers appear to date from the time of the Island Road realignment, occurring sometime between 1831 and 1858, likely in the later 1850s. The piers are situated at the end of a leafy cul-de-sac that transitions into a side driveway leading to Red Hall. They are located in a rural setting, bordered by hedges on one side and suburban houses on the other.
