Description
Leafield is a rural property located on Island Road, Ballycarry, Larne, County Antrim, within the townland of Forthill. The main house, originally constructed between 1820 and 1839, has been demolished, leaving only overgrown ruins of low rubble walls. Several outbuildings remain, including a two-storey gabled block with rubble walls and a slated roof, currently in a semi-derelict state. Adjoining this is a single-storey range with whitened walls and a corrugated iron roof. A description from a 1970 survey noted the house as having roughcast walls and a slated roof. The site appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1831 and was the birthplace of General Sir James Stuart Steele, who held a senior position in the British Army for three years. The vernacular building demonstrates no particular architectural merit.
