Description

The Brice Memorial is a stone memorial slab set into the north wall of the ruined 17th-century church of Templecorran, located within Templecorran graveyard on the southern edge of the village of Ballycarry, Larne, County Antrim. The memorial is rectangular with an angled top and is constructed of red sandstone. The upper portion is carved with armorial bearings in relief, while an inscription is positioned below, all set within a moulded sandstone frame. The ground in front of the memorial is enclosed by plain spiked railings resting on a sandstone plinth, and containing a concreted area.

Erected to the memory of Reverend Edward Brice (died 1636), who is buried in the church's now ruined south transept, the inscription details his life and four generations of his descendants, indicating it could not have been erected before 1720. Edward Brice was the first Presbyterian clergyman to preach in Ireland, beginning that work within the church walls in 1613. The memorial is situated within the boundary of the scheduled monument, ANT47:10. The former and current use of the memorial has been mausoleum. The construction date is estimated to be between 1720 and 1739.
