Description
This is an early 20th-century house exhibiting architectural influences from California bungalows, particularly in its entrance front. It was designed and built by William Calwell of Ballycarry, likely during the 1920s or 1930s, although the precise date is unknown. The house first appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1965.
The main entrance faces east. The east elevation features a prominent gable clad with wooden shingles on the upper part, which overhangs a full-width recessed veranda. The veranda is defined by a wide arch of white-painted timber lattice-work between square masonry end piers faced with small stones. The wall within the veranda area is finished with a smooth white-painted cement render. A single rectangular three-light timber casement window is located in the upper part of the gable, while two rectangular timber windows flank the central doorway, which has a small-paned glazed door. The roof is covered with synthetic slates, which are not original, and a chimney has been removed from the south side. The south and rear elevations are largely unremarkable, featuring a later lean-to car-port and modern windows respectively. The north elevation abuts an adjoining post office.
The house stands facing Main Street, slightly set back, with a concrete area in front enclosed by a white-painted rendered wall. William Calwell (1863-1953) also lived on the other side of Main Street at number 54, in a bungalow built for himself around 1908.
