Description
This building, now a private house, began as a railway station built between 1860 and 1879. It was designed by the architect Charles Lanyon, who served as engineer to the Carrickfergus and Larne Railway company, and opened in 1863, replacing a temporary platform that had been in place since 1862. Initially constructed from stone and brick, the station comprised a two-storey, three-bay gabled block with single-storey wings extending to the north and south. The wing to the south features a distinctive pair of coupled semi-circular headed windows. The northern wing is blank. The roof is covered with asbestos slates, and the building has modern PVC gutters and downpipes. The walls are rendered with a dry dash finish of limestone chippings. The front facing windows on the main block are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung with semi-circular heads and two-over-two glazing panes, including horns. Rear windows are replacements made from PVC. The building is situated in a rural location near a contemporary bridge crossing the railway line. The former station platform and yard areas have been developed into gardens. While originally a building of significant architectural and engineering interest, the structure has undergone substantial alterations, resulting in the loss of many original features. An old photograph, held by the owner in 1998, depicts the station in its original condition. The building is of industrial archaeological interest.
