Bridge over railway at Lower Island Road, Ballycarry, Larne, Co Antrim

This is a mid-19th century hump-backed bridge of masonry construction, built to carry Lower Island Road over a railway line. It was likely constructed around 1860, coinciding with the building of the Carrickfergus to Larne railway line and designed by Charles Lanyon, the railway’s engineer. The bridge is built of snecked basalt with squared white limestone voussoirs forming the segmental arch, and similar quoins around the abutments. Sandstone copings are also present. A red brick vault is located beneath the bridge, supported on basalt abutments up to the springing level. A later pipe run traverses the north face of the bridge, supported by an iron beam. The setting is rural, adjacent to a former railway station of a similar date. While not of special historic or architectural interest beyond its engineering example, the bridge has some industrial archaeological interest. It is located in the townland of Forthill and is owned by Central Government.
