Description

These are a pair of stone garden piers, likely dating from around 1800 to 1819, and associated with Red Hall. They represent an interesting example of late Georgian garden design and contribute to a picturesque group with the adjacent Victorian garden turret.

The piers are square and constructed of coursed white limestone, topped with tall pyramidal caps of white limestone rubble. The apex of the eastern pier is damaged, and the original gates are missing. Short, low screen walls made of basalt rubble flank each pier. They stand within the grounds of Red Hall, positioned at the end of a side driveway that connects with the main entrance driveway. A circular turret is located next to the western pier. The piers are set within a secluded location, surrounded by and overhung by mature trees.

The piers were built in connection with Red Hall and are depicted in an engraved view of the hall dating from 1869. While they do not appear on Ordnance Survey maps, they are part of a scheduled monument, reference ANT47:4. They are of local historical interest and demonstrate good style, proportion, and setting; the group value of the piers and turret is also noteworthy.
