Description

Ballycarry Presbyterian Church is a church of early 19th-century origin, constructed around 1830. It retains some original features, though significant later alterations have reduced its standing as a late Georgian example.

The church is rectangular, with rendered walls and a gabled slate roof. A gabled porch provides access, featuring an entrance set within a panelled surround of pilasters, a cornice, and bracket details supporting a plain pediment slightly raised from the wall. A frieze inscribed with the date MDCCCXXX (1830) is visible. An eaves cornice along the sides continues under the front gable as a corbel table. Floriated details have been added to the apex of both the porch and the main church gables, characteristic of later 19th-century work. Windows are set within semi-circular headed openings.

The church is situated facing the main road through the village, within a rural location. The main entrance is set back slightly from the road, preceded by a gatescreen and railings made of scrolling wrought ironwork with ornamental cast iron posts.

The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1831. Constructed in 1830 at a cost of £600, raised by subscription, it was initially described as a "very neat, plain edifice" comfortably fitted out internally, measuring 66 feet long by 20 feet wide and accommodating 300 people. In 1931, an extensive renovation occurred under the direction of William Calwell, an architect and member of the congregation. This involved the installation of new windows, a new floor, and a pipe organ, and the removal of two side galleries.
