Description

The Mill at Red Hall is a sizeable building of local interest, forming a prominent feature within the grounds of the historic Red Hall estate. While precise details regarding its original patron and construction date are scarce, it is believed to have been built between 1820 and 1839 by David Kerr, with a purpose to house threshing machinery, and with an attached stone straw house. The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1858.

The mill is a three-storey gabled structure built of snecked basalt in rough courses. The symmetrical entrance facade features a wide segmental arched doorway at ground floor level, with two rectangular openings above. One first-floor opening is now open and fitted with bars, the other contains a ledged timber door. A carved heraldic panel and datestone is positioned between the first-floor openings. A segmental arched window, now without glazing, is located on the second floor. To the left of the entrance front is a segmental arched opening, providing access to a long, deep, stone-vaulted chamber. The main side of the building is three storeys high, originally with five windows, though these are now derelict and have flat arched heads. The south side of the building is reduced to a single storey due to the sloping ground; it features a central segmental arched entrance with a damaged and altered ledged timber door, flanked by rectangular openings spanned by flat arches, and it is covered by a corrugated asbestos roof.

The mill stands within the grounds of Red Hall, facing onto one of the estate driveways. It is surrounded by trees and set into a former quarry, with a ramped approach leading up to the south side. The building is recorded as derelict and is of significant industrial archaeological interest. The site also falls within the area of a scheduled monument, no. ANT47:4.
