Description

This is a terrace of four two-storey gabled houses, dating from between 1900 and 1919, with a later single-storey addition at one end. The terrace forms a group of some local historic interest, although it possesses limited architectural merit when compared to other examples of its type. A modern, incongruous coastguard station has been added to the south end (numbered 76 on Ordnance Survey maps), along with a detached gabled garage nearby, both of which detract from the original setting.

The houses have Bangor blue slate roofs laid in regular courses, with red terracotta ridge tiles. The walls are white painted roughcast with red brick quoins and dressings to the window and door openings. The windows are timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung with horns, featuring a two-over-two glazing pattern with a single vertical glazing bar in each sash. Six chimneys are constructed from red brick, though three have been rebuilt without cornices or string courses. The original ledged timber front door is retained at number 78, however, the doors at numbers 80, 82 and 84 have been replaced with a multi-panelled door, a pseudo-Georgian door incorporating a fanlight (considered inappropriate), and a panelled door with side lights respectively.

The rear elevations feature similar materials and detailing to the front. Walled yards to the rear contain outbuildings constructed from basalt rubble, partly roughcast. The terrace is situated in an isolated but elevated position, overlooking Portmuck Bay and surrounded by fields, and is accessible via a lane. The modern coastguard station, with roughcast walls to the side and rear and red brick to the front, has a flat roof finished with an aluminium-framed canted glazing and timber fascia, and replaces a small single-storey store that originally stood on the site.

The terrace first appears on an Ordnance Survey map from 1902-3.
