Description

This is a former rectory, built between 1860 and 1879 in Cloghmore, Rosslea, County Fermanagh. It retains some of its original external character, although the original windows have been replaced with timber casements.

The two-storey, four-bay building is aligned northeast-southwest along the road, to the southwest of the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland Church. It has a pitched natural slate roof with an advanced eaves course supporting metal rainwater goods. Three cement-dashed chimneys are present, one situated between each bay. The gables have plain timber bargeboards. The main front of the building, facing southeast, has walls that are cement-dashed over coursed sandstone blocks, with a smooth rendered and painted basecourse and quoins. Bays 1, 2 and 4 each have a window on both floors. Bay 3 contains the front entrance, within a shallow, semi-elliptical opening. The entrance door is tongue and groove sheeted, flanked by ¾-height sidelights, each featuring a 1/1 pane. Above the door is a fanlight with sunburst glazing. A window is positioned directly above the fanlight on the first floor. All windows are timber top-hung casements with painted jambs and stone sills, equally aligned but unequally spaced. Windows are also present on both floors of each gable to the left and right.

The rear elevation is unpainted and has full-height lean-to additions extending from the right end and the centre. These additions are detailed as part of the house, each with a window on every floor. A corrugated metal canopy links the addition to the two-storey return. The rear face of the return has a window on each floor, with blank cheeks to the left and right. The addition has a window to the ground floor; its left cheek has a tongue and groove sheeted door, while the right cheek is blank and flush with the right gable of the main block.

The building was initially documented as a manse in the 1875 valuation revision book and was labelled ‘Clogh Rectory’ on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map. It is currently used as a private house.
