Description
Detached two-bay two-storey former corn mill, built around 1820, located on the west side of Aughnamirigan Road, Omagh. The building is rectangular on plan, aligned north-south, with a single-storey porch extension at the east and a further two-storey block at the south. The roof is pitched natural slate with blue and black clay ridge tiles and replacement ogee-profile aluminium rainwater goods. Walls are roughly coursed random rubble with tooled fieldstone quoins. Windows are square-headed timber casements with projecting stone heads and sills.
The principal elevation faces east and is abutted on the right by a single-storey entrance porch with pitched natural slate roof. An exposed section at the left contains a square-headed opening at first floor level. The left (south) gable contains a metal sheeted sliding door at ground floor. The rear (west) elevation is accessed at first floor level and contains a square-headed timber sheeted entrance door at the right and a single window at the left. The right (north) gable is blank and is attached by an original and intact cast-iron mill wheel with timber floatboards. The single-storey extension at the east gable contains a single window at the centre, with a square-headed timber sheeted entrance door at the right of the left cheek. The south block is detailed as the north block with roughcast rendered walling and contains three windows at first floor on the east elevation.
The mill is located at the road edge, with the south block set back from the road with a gravel forecourt.
The site appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1833 as a rectangular building, captioned 'Corn Mill', with two further buildings to the south captioned 'Corn Kiln'. The second edition shows a mill pond. By the 1906 edition, it is captioned 'Aghnamirigan Mill' with associated features including a mill dam, sluice and mill race marked. The Townland Valuation records the entire property as a corn mill, kiln and land, valued at £8, occupied by Michael and John McGlinchy. A marginal note states the mill would let for £18 yearly, though it was valued at £12 when classed with other mills in the country. Griffith's Valuation of 1858 records the site as leased from Sir William McMahon Baronet. The corn mill and kiln, corresponding to the current building, was valued at £6 15 shillings and occupied by Andrew, James and John McGlinchy, each also occupying a house, office and land valued at 15 shillings. A note explains the decrease in valuation: the corn mill had been published at £8 on the townland valuation but the business had fallen off very much, with very little meal being made in the country at that time. Subsequent Valuation Revisions record the mill at £5 5 shillings in 1860, and the associated houses valued together at £2 5 shillings in 1881. The occupier of the mill was revised from John to Michael in 1879, with the other two names deleted in 1880 and 1881.
The mill and its associated workings remain largely intact, though some external detailing has been altered. While of local and industrial archaeological interest, it is not among the finest examples of the type.
