Description
Campbells Bridge is a five-span stone bridge, built between 1840 and 1859, carrying the Aghnamirigan Road over the Glensawisk Burn, in the townland of Binnafreaghan. The bridge is an interesting example of its type, demonstrating skill in polychromatic masonry and representing the development of river crossings from a ford. The design is notable for its diminishing arches, which reduce in size towards the centre. The bridge features squared and tooled basalt spandrels, topped by a stringcourse and random rubble parapets with squared toothed basalt coping. It has round-headed arches sprung from dressed sandstone voussoirs, with V-shaped cutwaters and piers; the soffits are cement rendered. The double carriageway is tarmac paved, with grassy embankments and grassy V-shaped islands located off the cutwaters. 'Campbell’s Bridge' first appeared on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854, and the earlier 1833 map showed the road approaching the river and continuing on the other side, indicating the previous presence of a ford. The bridge has local historical interest and is of industrial archaeological interest, displaying features related to architectural style, proportion, ornamentation, plan form, structural system, and setting. It is currently used as a bridge and is owned by Central Government.
