Description

A detached two-bay two-storey stone farmhouse built around 1870, located on the east side of Magheraliss Road near Gortin. The symmetrical and well-proportioned building sits at the interface between vernacular and formal design, with a simple rectangular plan facing north and positioned within a farmyard setting on sloping ground.

The farmhouse is constructed of random basalt rubble walling with rendered chimneystacks at the gables. The roof formerly carried natural slate, with remnants surviving, projecting stone eaves, and no rainwater goods. Windows are square-headed, though all are missing with only the remains of timber sash boxes surviving. The principal north elevation features a windbreaker porch with gable remains at its centre, with a single window flanking each side of the porch on the ground floor and three windows on the first floor. The east gable is abutted by the remains of a two-storey outbuilding with an exposed blank section. The rear south elevation has a variety of windows, with a bed outshot to the left bay and a relieving arch above. The west gable is similarly abutted by an outbuilding with a blank exposed section.

The farmyard complex includes a ruinous two-storey outbuilding with two window openings and an external stair abutting the east gable, a single-storey multi-bay rendered outbuilding with pitched corrugated metal roof abutting the west gable, and a detached single-storey multi-bay rendered outbuilding with pitched corrugated metal roof to the north of the farmhouse.

The house first appears on the third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905–6. Griffith's Valuation records a building on the site occupied by Stephen McBride valued at 15 shillings, though this likely refers to an earlier building elsewhere on the plot. Annual Revision records name the lessor as A W C Hamilton, with the plot value raised to £2 5 shillings in 1874, indicating the construction of the new house. The McBride family occupied the house throughout the period of Annual Revisions from 1860 to 1929, with Francis McBride becoming owner in fee in 1909. While of local interest, the building is of a relatively late date and common type, and insufficient fabric survives to merit listing.
