Description
Drumlea Bridge is a two-span, flat stone road-over-river bridge built around 1850. It crosses the Owenreagh River on a northeast-southwest axis and is located in a rural setting near Rousky, Omagh, in County Tyrone. The bridge is an example of mid-19th century engineering and stone masonry, reflecting the development of rural infrastructure in the west of the county.
The bridge features two segmental-headed arches constructed from tooled stone ashlar voussoirs, rising from a projecting stone course at the 'springer' level. It includes pointed, v-cutwaters within coursed square stone spandrels, which rise to parapet level with tooled, rock-faced coping. Full-height stone ashlar piers are situated at each end of the elevations, leading to the abutments. The arches have stone ashlar soffits, and the carriageway is surfaced with two-lane bitmac. The walls are constructed of stone.
The bridge appeared on the first edition Ordnance Survey map, subsequently being captioned ‘Drumlea Bridge’ on the second edition map. It is described by McCutcheon as "worthy of attention," who also detailed the development of coaching services in the county during the 19th century, noting the importance of Omagh and Strabane on the Dublin-Derry mail coach route. The bridge holds local historical interest and is of industrial archaeological significance, notable for its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, and structural system.
