Description
The graveyard is situated on an elevated site overlooking Galloon Lough, northwest of Gallon Bridge. It contains numerous stone memorials dating from the early 18th century, and two sculptured stone crosses located at the west and east ends of the churchyard; both crosses are designated Scheduled Monuments (Ferm 261:31). Access is gained via four stone steps enclosed by a low wall, leading to a pair of square-in-section gate piers topped with pyramidal caps and cross finials (the finial to the left is missing). The piers are cement line rendered. The eastern cross, slightly more sheltered, stands 1.61 metres high and features carvings including the Last Judgement, Jacob wrestling with the Angel (north face), Moses, Aaron and Hur, and the sacrifice of Isaac (east face), St Paul and St Anthony receiving bread from a raven, the baptism of Christ, the adoration of the Magi (west face), and a Celtic knot design (south face). The western cross, 1.83 metres high, features carvings including the Fall, Daniel in the Lions’ Den, and the Temptation of St Anthony (east face); Noah's Ark?, the sacrifice of Isaac, and three children in the Fiery Furnace (west face); zoomorphic figures, an animal head, a Celtic knot design, and an inscribed prayer (south face). Many stone memorials are low, circular stones carved with a skull and crossbones and a coffin on their west face. The graveyard may date back to the late 10th century.
