Description
Donaghue's Cottage is a delightful thatched dwelling dating from between 1820 and 1839, situated on the 19 Derrykerrib Road in Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh. The cottage is set back from the road by a small garden and retains most of its original architectural features despite a modern extension to the rear.
The single-storey, three-bay direct-entry thatched cottage includes an attic and runs roughly east-west along the north side of the road. The front garden is enclosed by hedgerows and accessed via a pair of cement-rendered gate piers topped with pyramidal caps supporting a cast-iron gate. The thatched roof has cement-rendered skews, and a polychrome brick chimney sits between the left and centre bays. The principal elevation faces south. Walls are lime-rendered and whitewashed, lined over random rubble with a contrasting basecourse. Vertical bands of cement render mark the ends of the building. A windbreak porch with a modern glazed timber door is positioned to the right of the centre bay, with blank cheeks on either side. A 3/3 sliding sash window, with horns and a painted stone cill within a painted swept surround mimicking an architrave, is located to the left of the porch. Identical windows are present in the left and right bays. The left gable is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding with a corrugated-metal roof, lime-rendered walls, and tongue-and-groove doors. The rear elevation is lime-rendered and adjoins a modern return. The modern extension features a pitched artificial slate roof with overhanging boxed eaves and cement-dashed walls with a smooth rendered basecourse. All windows in the extension are modern uPVC with concrete cills. The eastern cheek of the extension has a glazed timber door to the left and a window to its right. The rear (north) gable of the extension features a landscape window. The western cheek is abutted by a small central heating unit to the left, with an obscurely glazed window to the right. The right gable incorporates a small metal-framed window to the attic with a painted stone cill.
A building is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834/35, and it is recorded in the second valuation of 1862, where the occupant was listed as Mary McDonagh, and the lessor was Reverend Baptist Barton Crozier with a rateable value of £1.
The listing includes the house, contiguous outbuildings, piers, gates, and walling. The cottage is of vernacular style and retains its thatched roof, with notable architectural, proportional, and structural qualities. It has local historical significance.
