Description
The Derrykerrib Bridge is a modern reinforced-concrete structure that connects the mainland with Derrykerrib Island in County Fermanagh. Built between 1992 and 1999, it features a horizontal span carrying a one-and-a-half lane road and a footpath on each side, crossing a branch of Upper Lough Erne. Vertical metal railings are positioned on both sides of the bridge.
The need for a bridge to the island arose in 1929 following the establishment of the border, which limited access to Belturbet, the area’s commercial centre. Initial plans were drawn up in 1939, with construction awarded to A.H. Tisdall, a contractor from Lisnaskea, and steelwork supplied by Robert Craig & Sons of Belfast. Work commenced in 1939 and was likely completed shortly thereafter. A previous bridge, described as a metal girder span with a timber deck and metal railings, was replaced in 1992.
A resident recalled the earlier structure, and an EHS survey in October 1993 documented this information. The bridge's construction was prompted by the desire to improve links between the island and Newtownbutler on the Northern Ireland side. Documents from Fermanagh County Council and a report by F.W. Hamond (dated 5 October 1993) provide further details. The bridge is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
