Description

Wattle Bridge is a well-maintained bridge dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. It carries a two-lane road over the River Finn, located between the townlands of Edergool and Annaghmore Glebe. The bridge is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with finely dressed masonry quoins on the abutments and piers, as well as for the arch voussoirs. Cutwaters on both faces are also of finely dressed masonry blocks, rounded in cross-section and topped with moulded conical sandstone caps. The abutments and piers are founded on concrete, and the underside of the arches is gunited. The parapets have been rebuilt recently, though the original thin coping stones have been re-used.

Historical records, including Moll's 1714 map, the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6" map, and subsequent editions, identify a bridge at this location, known as "Wattle Bridge." The 1835 Ordnance Survey Memoir describes the road as the mail coach route between Enniskillen and Dublin (via Cavan). The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and exhibits strong architectural merit due to its style, proportions, ornamentation, plan form, and structural system. While alterations have occurred, the bridge retains significant historical and landscape value and contributes to the character of the surrounding area.
