Description
Gortnacarrow Bridge is a medium-sized causeway bridge built between 1780 and 1799, carrying the Belturbet to Clones road over the River Finn. It is of local interest and possesses industrial archaeological significance.
The bridge’s main section consists of three equally sized arches spanning the river, with a fourth, smaller arch on the east bank that is dry under normal conditions. Four narrower flood arches are also present—one along the eastern approach road and three on the western approach, the arch at the extreme west having been rebuilt in cast concrete. The bridge is constructed throughout of random rubble with dressed voussoirs. It features angled cutwaters to both faces, extending up to the base of the parapets. Remnants of the stones that formerly supported the arch falsework are visible inside the arches at spring level. The parapets are coped with large, squared limestone blocks. The piers supporting the three river spans are footed in concrete, and the interior surfaces of all arches have been gunited. Recent repairs have involved rebuilding sections of both parapets using random rubble. Six concrete buttresses are present along the downstream or left approach wall.
The bridge is marked as 'Gortnacarrow Bridge' on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map and subsequent editions.
