Description
Lismacsheela House is an attractive early 19th-century house occupying an elevated but sheltered site in open farmland at Lismacsheela Townland near Rosslea. The building retains many original features and preserves most of its external and internal character. A gatehouse stands opposite the main entrance.
The house is a symmetrical two-storey structure of three bays, aligned south-west to north-east, with a narrow advanced and gabled central bay. It is approached by a long winding driveway accessed from the south. The pitched roof is natural slate with painted cement-rendered chimneys featuring chamfered stone copings on the party walls between each bay. Overhanging eaves are supported on vertically timber-sheeted soffits and carry plastic ogee rainwater goods with downpipes to either side of the principal façade.
The walls are painted and lined cement-rendered over a contrasting base course. All windows are paired uPVC top-hung casements with masonry mullion, set in stepped cement-rendered reveals with flush splayed cills unless otherwise stated.
The principal elevation faces south-east. The central bay contains the entrance, accessed by three concrete steps, comprising a modern six-panel timber door with its top centre panel glazed with etched glass and a narrow obscurely glazed transom above. A window is set into the gable apex above the entrance. The left and right bays each contain a window set within a projecting bay with monopitched natural slate roof and overhanging eaves matching the house. The cheeks of both bays are blank. Each of the left and right gables has a central window to each floor.
The rear elevation is almost entirely abutted by two side-by-side returns set perpendicular to the main house, forming a double-pile profile. The return to the right is original; the return to the left is a recent sympathetic extension. The narrow exposed section of the main block at the extreme right is blank. Both returns have pitched natural slate roofs detailed as the house; the right return has a central chimney. The right return features a modern glazed and timber entrance door to the left and a window to the first floor centre. The right cheek has a central window to the ground floor. All windows to the left return are uPVC top-hung casements. The end gable has a narrow window to the left and a large window to the right at each floor, all with plain reveals. The left cheek has a uPVC door to the left and a window to the right at each floor, all set in reveals matching those to the main block.
The house is reached by a long winding lane set in open farmland, accessed through a pair of curved wet-dashed walls with brick copings and square-section piers with pyramidal caps at either end. The house has a large farmyard to the rear and is enclosed by a small mature planted garden with hedged boundary to front and sides.
A building is shown at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. Its valuation of £8 6s 0d in the 1837 First Valuation Revision Book indicates a substantial two-storey house, probably the present one, dating the building to between 1820 and 1839.
