Description
This is a substantial single segmental-arch bridge carrying a two-lane road over the River Finn, located between the townlands of Killyvilly and Lisnawesnagh, near Rosslea in County Fermanagh. The bridge was built between 1860 and 1879, with the datestone confirming construction in 1868. It is constructed of finely dressed random sandstone blocks, with the voussoirs of the arch being finely dressed vee-jointed sandstone with rusticated keystones. The remainder of the bridge is similarly constructed, laid in courses. The parapets are built of larger blocks, incorporating a string course along the inside face of their pitched copings. They terminate in projecting vee-jointed piers with rusticated faces and shallow shouldered pyramidal caps; the middle block of each parapet is also slightly raised and finished with a shallow pyramid on its top face. An eroded inscription on the inside face of the downstream (southwest) block reads "Wm McPhillips / Builder / 1868." A curved wing wall is present on the upstream left bank, and two pipes are carried across the downstream face. Historical maps from 1834, 1857 and 1907 show a road running close to the bridge’s location; the 1907 map identifies the structure as Lisnawesnagh Bridge, noting the earlier road had been realigned. The bridge exhibits good architectural style, proportion, and ornamentation, and possesses local historical interest. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest and is owned by Central Government.
