Description

Black Bridge is a single-span humpbacked rubble stone bridge erected around 1815, located south of the mansion within Baronscourt demesne. The bridge carries a secondary estate road over a stream linking Lough Fanny to the south and Lough Catherine to the north, set in farmland with grassed and wooded embankments.

The bridge is constructed of random rubble stone throughout its abutments, spandrels, and parapets. It features a single segmental arch with rubble stone voussoirs, and the parapet is topped with soldier coursed coping. Some cement repointing has been undertaken. The structure remains in relatively good condition with most original construction intact.

The bridge represents part of the estate improvements carried out by the seventh Earl in the early nineteenth century. Its predecessor was a wooden bridge which proved inadequate to the site's challenging conditions. In August 1808, engineer John James Burgoyne reported to the Marquis of Abercorn that "The Black Bridge was almost carried away and the railing dashed off by the force of the stones and sand, and the entire of the channel from Givan's to the lake filled full." By September 1814, Burgoyne noted the wooden bridge was failing and recommended replacement with a permanent stone structure. An estimate of £25 to £30 was provided, with the observation that "The black bridge is beginning to fail" and "It is in so low a damp situation that wood will not last long there." The stone replacement proceeded in 1815, with Burgoyne reporting: "We have begun to build a stone bridge instead of the black one which was so much decayed as to be very dangerous. We have been obliged to pile under it as the bog is 14 feet deep." The bridge is recorded on the Ordnance Survey map from 1833 and appears in subsequent editions.

The structure underwent repairs carried out by Lynch & Sons in 1998. Black Bridge is one of only two rubble stone bridges to remain intact on the demesne, the other being Semple's Bridge, and has group value with other listed structures within the estate.
