Description
White Bridge is a precast concrete bridge erected around 1950 in the classical style, spanning a shallow tributary stream between Lough Catherine and Lough Mary, just north of Baronscourt mansion in its demesne. The bridge is elegant in appearance and could easily be mistaken for an early nineteenth-century stone bridge, but closer inspection reveals it to be constructed of concrete and steel—materials that might seem incongruous in the magnificent setting of the Baronscourt demesne, which is registered in the Register of Parks and Gardens. Despite the use of modern materials, the classical style of White Bridge complements the character of the demesne and serves as an important landscape feature within it. The bridge has group value with other listed structures in the demesne.
The bridge is a single-span structure consisting of a shallow segmental concrete arch carried on four segmental steel girders, which are visible within the soffit. The spandrels are panelled and plainly detailed. At either side, the abutments are terminated by slightly projecting square piers, also with panels. Contained within these piers is a precast concrete balustraded parapet with saddleback coping. The bridge carries a dirt road over the wide stream connecting Lough Mary to Lough Catherine. The setting features grassed embankments, with the north lawns of the mansion directly to the southeast, woodland to the north, and grazing land to the west.
The present bridge appears to have been erected on the site of an earlier stone bridge. It underwent repairs carried out by Lynch & Sons in 1998. The original bridge, formerly known as Holme's or Holmes's Bridge, is first recorded by name on the 1833 Ordnance Survey map, shown connecting 'Seat' and 'Boat Ho' between Lough Catherine and Lough Fanny. Ordnance Survey maps record it as 'Holmes's Br' until 1907, when it becomes 'White Br'. A bridge at this location is recorded on a 1777 Map of Barons Court Park in the Manor of Derrigoon, though it is not labelled. Historical documentation confirms the bridge's existence before 1814, as evidenced by a letter dated 23 May 1814 from John James Burgoyne of Strabane to the Marquis of Abercorn, which states: 'Divin has sloped the banks on each side below Holmes bridge and is deepening the channel there, and I think it will be a great improvement.'
