Description
This is a former small stone bridge that stood over a stream on the Baronscourt estate, near Newtownstewart, County Tyrone. Construction likely occurred between 1840 and 1859. The bridge has been demolished.
Early Ordnance Survey maps from 1833 show a “Sluice” on the site, but not a bridge. A bridge first appeared on the 1854 Ordnance Survey map, also beside a caption of “Sluice.” By 1907, the map showed no caption, and the 1947 Ordnance Survey map referred to it as “Fbr. St.” (likely referring to a fibre stone bridge).
The bridge has industrial archaeological interest. It was previously recorded as HB10/04/050C and was delisted on 25 July 2011. Records relating to the bridge can be found in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) within the OS/6/6/17 series.
