Description

Barons Court Farm is a range of multi-bay two-storey stone farm buildings erected around 1860, situated on the east side of Baronscourt Road. The complex has group value with the wider Baronscourt Estate.

The buildings are arranged in four blocks—east, south, west, and north—forming a rectangular plan that fully encloses a central square courtyard, now infilled. They are constructed of squared-and-snecked rubble with ashlar sandstone quoins. The roofs are pitched corrugated asbestos with asbestos ridge tiles.

The east block's east elevation is the most prominent, containing six segmental-headed carriage-arches with sandstone surrounds, partially blocked, flanked by two windows on the left and four on the right, with eleven additional windows at first-floor level. Windows elsewhere are replacement timber-framed multi-paned fixed lights, while the east elevation retains original square-headed metal-framed casements. All windows have stepped sandstone surrounds and projecting sandstone sills. The north and south elevations of the east block are abutted by larger projecting gabled buildings. The west elevation is abutted by later infill.

The south block's exposed section at the left is blank. Its west gable contains a segmental-headed carriage-arch with sandstone voussoirs. The north elevation's exposed right section contains a segmental-headed carriage-arch and window opening, both now blocked. The east gable is largely rebuilt above eaves level with a large square-headed opening accessed at first-floor level.

The west block contains, at ground-floor level on its west elevation, two windows on the left and two large square-headed openings on the right. Eight first-floor windows are now blocked. Its north and south elevations are abutted by the east and west blocks, and its east elevation is abutted by infill.

The north block consists of two distinct sections: a two-storey bay on the right and a two-and-a-half-storey bay on the left. The left bay has three square-headed openings at ground-floor centre, flanked by a single window on the left and a segmental-headed carriage-arch with rebated square-headed opening within on the right. Loop-hole openings with sandstone surrounds surmount each at first-floor level. The right bay contains a large square-headed rebated opening at centre fitted with double-leaf corrugated metal sliding doors, flanked by single and double windows, also surmounted by loop-hole openings. Its east gable has a ground-floor window and first-floor square-headed opening. The west gable contains a vertically-sheeted door in a sandstone surround and a ground-floor window, with a large square-headed opening containing a timber screen at first floor.

The central portion has been infilled with concrete columns and twentieth-century steel trusses, significantly degrading the complex's character. The roofs throughout have been covered with corrugated asbestos, replacing earlier materials.

The buildings are set within a farmyard accessed via a concrete lane from the north. A curved rendered boundary wall stands directly north of the range. The site is bounded to the west by hedging and to the east by a timber fence. An attached double-height corrugated metal shed with barrelled roof stands to the south. Further modern agricultural sheds to the north and west, including mono-pitched rubble buildings, rendered offices, and corrugated storage structures, have further degraded the complex's character.

The range retains some original character externally in its facade proportions and original layout, though twentieth-century modifications have substantially altered its appearance.

Historical records show the buildings first appear on the third-edition Ordnance Survey map of 1905, captioned as 'New Farm', with an 'Old Farm' located further west. By the fourth edition (1939–51), they are captioned 'Barons Court Farm'. The buildings are first recorded in valuation records in 1864, when the Marquis of Abercorn was the occupier in fee. The 'farm offices' were valued at £37, with a marginal plan showing a central single-storey area captioned 'cattle stalls' surrounded by two- and two-and-a-half-storey structures. In 1911, a steward's house and small garden, valued at £6, were added to the site (now ruined), occupied by Robert Hugh Kinlough. Valuers' notes from 1934 to 1957 document the buildings' use as a creamery, including details of milk production quantities and distribution.
