Former Land Steward’s House, 52 Beragh Hill Road, Londonderry, BT48 8LY

This is a two-storey, three-bay former land steward's house situated on the McCorkell farm in the townland of Ballynagard, Londonderry. It was likely built between 1880 and 1899, around the time of extensions to other farm outbuildings and the main dwelling house.

The house is externally smooth rendered and colour washed, with a slate roof, and is gabled. It has been recently renovated, which has unfortunately obscured some of its original character. Applied concrete architraves in a classical style frame the windows and doors. The well-tended garden is divided by rendered walls with precast concrete copings, which step towards a renovated rendered wall along the road. Modern PVC windows and rainwater goods have been installed.

A photograph from 1990 shows the window openings largely as they are now, but with twelve-pane sliding sash windows on the first floor, and a tripartite window to the living room, featuring a twelve-pane sash flanked by four-pane side lights. Internally, the building was badly decayed, although original window linings and fireplaces were retained. The house was originally included in the listing for the adjacent Ballyarnet estate (HB01/27/018) but was delisted on 21st May 1992 following repair work undertaken as part of a Northern Ireland Housing Executive grant-aided scheme.
