Description

A single-span reinforced concrete road bridge carrying Corramore Road over the Glenelly River, built in 1920. The bridge represents one of the earliest reinforced concrete bridges in Northern Ireland, constructed for Londonderry County Council to the design of engineer C. L. Boddie using the Hennebique system of reinforced concrete, with structural details prepared by Messrs L G Mouchel & Partners Ltd.

The bridge comprises a plain string-course at carriageway level with square-plan concrete end-piers topped by pyramidal coping, each pair connected by plainly detailed cast-iron railing. Splayed concrete abutments support further square-plan piers at the outer edge, detailed to match those of the parapet. The carriageway is approximately 4 metres wide. The structure remains largely unaltered from its original construction.

First edition Ordnance Survey mapping from 1833 indicates a wooden bridge formerly stood on the site, though no road is marked. Subsequent Ordnance Survey editions (1854, 1906, and 1952-3) show a road crossing the river but do not specifically caption the bridge structure.

The bridge is of particular historical significance as one of the earliest recorded reinforced concrete bridges in Northern Ireland, and the third earliest of those constructed entirely in concrete. It represents an early example of the Hennebique system of reinforcement, pioneered by French contractor François Hennebique from the early 1890s onwards. Louis Gustav Mouchel, appointed as agent for the Hennebique system in Britain in 1897, was instrumental in bringing this technology to Britain and Ireland. The bridge sits in an unspoiled rural setting between Plumbridge and Draperstown.
