Description

This is a substantial stone building dating from the late 19th century, originally constructed as stables and later converted for educational use. It is located on the Culmore Road, Londonderry, and is part of Thornhill College. The building is arranged as a three-pile structure, with a 1½-story design and a partial basement, and is covered with natural slate roofing. There is a single chimney stack.

The west elevation features a projecting, gabled porch at its center, flanked by two pairs of tall, vertical windows with three panes each and two opening vents at ground floor level. Above the porch, a door is located under the barge apex, with access provided by a metal spiral staircase. The central gable has two coupled tall vertical windows, again with five panes and two opening vents. The east gable is largely unaltered, with a window instead of a door under the gable apex; a spiral stairway was originally located internally. The south elevation has three gables; the westernmost has two vertical windows with three panes and two opening vents at ground floor, with a door and spiral stair above. Originally, brick-trimmed oculi were present on this facade, but these have since been filled in with stone. The east side rises to two-and-a-half stories, with a former coach house on the lower floor, featuring a brick-trimmed gateway and windows. The first floor windows on this side resemble those of the west elevation, with matching dormers. North-facing gables are connected by a series of vomitories or covered corridor links, creating a somewhat complex arrangement to accommodate level changes. Dormers, gabled and slated, are positioned above the eaves line. The roofs are covered with natural slates, and the walls are constructed from random rubble stonework of schist. Patent roof glazing provides daylight to the interior of the building's central section.

The stable block dates to around 1885 and is contemporaneous with the main house. Following the college's relocation in 1932, the stables were converted into classrooms.
