Description

This is a semi-detached house, likely built between 1840 and 1859, and situated on Culmore Road in Londonderry. It forms part of a wider, unusual three-bay building which incorporates two houses of differing sizes. While initially noted for possible architectural merit in 1970, the building has undergone extensive renovation, significantly obscuring its original character.

The dwelling is one-and-a-half storeys high and occupies two bays of a three-bay structure shared with its neighbour. The building has been substantially altered with the addition of PVC windows and a projecting glazed porch situated near the gable, which is disproportionate to the overall design but matches the size of the adjacent property. A dormer with a matching pitch to the neighbour's porch bay is also present. A flat-roofed dormer extending two window bays wide is on the central bay. Below, two PVC windows are present, one to each bay, with projecting slate lean-tos. A bay window of recent construction has been added to the gable, and the roof pitch has been altered at the rear to accommodate a kitchen extension.

An Ordnance Survey map from 1853 indicates a building on this site. A record photograph from the 1970 survey depicts a single building with harled and whitened walls and a hipped natural slate roof. Two sand cement rendered chimneys are visible on the ridge. Original windows were small, single-pane casements with curved heads on the first floor and four-pane sash windows below, except at the south end, where one window was slightly out of alignment and later converted into a modern fixed window with a top-opening light. A tile-roofed porch with whitewashed walls was positioned on the south side, alongside a large window facing the road. The original impression was one of expansive solid walls contrasted with small windows. The building’s appearance suggested a possible former use as a coastguard or police station, although this is unconfirmed by maps. Differences in window styles may suggest the building was divided in 1970. Subsequent renovations have fundamentally changed its appearance. The occupant was unable to provide any information concerning the building's history.
