Description

This is a pleasing late Georgian style terrace cottage, likely built between 1820 and 1839, and later improved in the mid-Victorian period. Together with the terrace it forms a picturesque arrangement within well-maintained gardens.

The house is a two-storey, three-bay terrace, located in the middle of three similar properties. The exterior is rendered with a Tyrolean finish, and the roof is covered with asbestos slates, featuring low chimneys at either end of the ridge. A pitched band, rendered to resemble walls, runs the length of the front elevation and aligns with the slated bands of the adjacent buildings; it appears to be thicker at ground floor level and steps back at the first floor. The front door is centrally positioned, flanked by tripartite windows that echo the design of number 172. The first-floor windows are sliding sash windows, with nine panes. The detailing is generally consistent with number 172. A half-round metal gutter is present, but not at the recessed section. Windows, the front door, and the plinth are painted black. A two-storey extension to the rear creates a double-pile house, continuing the design features of the extension at number 172.

The terrace is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1830, and it is thought to have originally been a single-storey structure erected as tenant houses by the Culmore Estate or the Irish Society. The upper floor was likely added after 1860.

The building exhibits architectural merit through its style, proportions, and group value, although alterations have lessened some of its original character. It also possesses local historical interest and is privately owned.
