Description
This is a semi-detached house, likely built between 1840 and 1859, situated on Culmore Road, Londonderry. Originally part of an unusual arrangement where the two semi-detached houses were of differing sizes, the building possesses architectural merit, though this has been largely obscured by later renovations. It is a one-and-a-half-story house with a gabled form and dormer window. The walls are now smooth, rendered, and colour-washed. A recent, out-of-proportion glazed timber porch sits at the front, alongside a mullioned window. A large garden extends to one side, and a flat-roofed kitchen extension has been added to the rear. The roof is covered with man-made slate, and there is a rendered chimney. A renovated doorway provides access.
The house is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1853. A photograph taken during a 1970 survey reveals a building with harled and whitewashed walls and a hipped natural slate roof, featuring two sand cement rendered chimneys on the ridge. The original windows included three single-pane casement windows with curved heads at the first floor, and four-pane sash windows below, except at the south end where one window was slightly misaligned and later converted into a modern fixed window with a top-opening light. A tile-roofed porch with whitewashed walls and a large window faced the road. The overall impression was of substantial solid walls relative to the window size. The building’s appearance suggested a possible former coastguard or police station, though there is no documentary evidence to support this. Variations in window styles may indicate a division of the building occurred around 1970. It’s location is within the townland of Ballynagard, and the occupant was unwilling or unable to provide any historical information.
