Description
The Culmore Tavern is a single-storey building situated prominently at the junction of Culmore Point Road and Culmore Road in the townland of Culmore, Londonderry. Construction likely occurred between 1820 and 1839, and the building appeared as a romantic cottage in a 1970 survey, featuring ivy cladding and external seating. The building is of smooth, rendered construction, painted with a wet-dash finish which was undergoing repainting during a recent visit. It has slated roofs and a projecting side entrance porch and rear return. The front elevation facing Culmore Road is six bays long, low, and retains moulded, plastered surrounds to the doors and windows, with one door remaining within architraves. Doors and windows are painted black. The interior was gutted and extended to the rear, and while a complete renovation has occurred since the current owner acquired the property fifteen years ago, the roadside facade, gables, and an early type petrol pump remain. Originally a bar and grocery, the building is shown on OS 1830 No. 14. Ownership in the early 20th century belonged to Mr. McCool, later McHale. The petrol pump, dating from the 1920s, is located at the south-west corner of the building and is now disused. While the building was previously considered for group value, it was delisted on 27th September 2002.
