Description
This is a storey-and-a-half vernacular house, likely constructed between 1820 and 1839. It is situated on the south side of Clooney Road, adjacent to the carriageway, in the townland of Tullybrisland. The building appears on the Ordnance Survey Sheet of 1830 and was formerly the tenants' cottage of the farm opposite, currently owned by the O’Hara family of Ballykelly.
The house is four structural bays long. The western bay serves as a store, with a tin lean-to roof and exterior access. The main entrance is centrally located, elevated four steps above the road level, and is now accessed via a modern stone-clad platform with railings and concrete steps at each end. The entrance is flanked by two timber casement windows on either side, with two-pane side lights but no fanlight. All openings on the facade are trimmed with smooth plaster, contrasted by a brown pebbledash finish to the rest of the wall. Three flat-topped dormers project from the roof at eaves level, each featuring a six-pane sash window and a PVC gutter; other rainwater goods are also PVC. The roof is covered in natural slate and has three chimneys. Small square windows illuminate the attic rooms within the side gables. To the rear, there is a small farmyard, and the building extends westward with lean-to additions.
The building retains many original fittings. An unusual "lath" roof construction was noted by the surveyor prior to purchase, and the dormer windows are of an unusual and pleasing design, representing an interesting variation of vernacular architecture. Modern front windows and the pebbledash finish detract somewhat from the building’s overall appearance.
