Cross, Clooney Road, Eglinton, Co Londonderry, BT47 3DR

This is a schist stone cross, likely of medieval or earlier origin, situated on the south side of Clooney Road, near Eglinton, County Londonderry. While its current location is believed to be a later relocation, it retains a very old appearance. The cross stands approximately 20 metres from the roadside hedge, within a steeply sloping field, and is enclosed by a metal post and wire fence. Recent housing is located to the east.

The cross itself is approximately 900 millimetres high and 600 millimetres across, with a shaft measuring roughly 350 by 150 millimetres. The north face of the shaft has a rebated arris, which tapers. This rebate is returned on the underside of the eroded crossheads, and the upper part of the shaft is virtually worn away, appearing as a stump. There are otherwise no discernible markings.

Historical records, including the Ordnance Survey Memoirs, suggest the cross was formerly found inverted in a ditch and has been moved from its original location, which was closer to the old churchyard, about 1.9 kilometres to the east. The cross functions as a memorial and is considered a monument.
